Shoplifting in Germany

Crime ranking: Shoplifters strike most often in this federal state

Nisan 23, 2021
In addition to the ongoing Corona lockdown, shoplifting is a particular burden on the already struggling retail sector in 2020. Although shops opened 35 days less last year, the number of cases in Thuringia increased by 15 percent. This and all other findings of the nationwide analysis can be found in the charts below. Milestone Systems has analysed and compared the case numbers of shoplifting in the federal states from 2019 and 2020 as well as the days when stores were open of retail businesses.
Absolute numbers as well as the percentage change between the years 2019 and 2020 can be seen in the following graphs:

For better comparability, shoplifting cases are shown in the following graph as offences per 100,000 residents:
As retailers were restricted from opening in 2020 due to lockdown, the number of offences per day and the comparison with 2019 is shown in the graph below:
About the study:
The figures on shoplifting in the respective federal states were taken from the police crime statistics. The press office of the Saarland police provided their data by e-mail. Since not all federal states indicate percentage changes, these are partly based on own calculations. In the calculation of shop opening days, Sundays, on which stores were allowed to open, were not taken into account due to regional fluctuations. The population figures are based on the data of the Federal Statistical Office for 2019. More recent data was not provided at the time of analysis.
