COPENHAGEN - September 9th, 2010. The weekend of September 11th brings a special occurrence for vintage railway train enthusiasts of all ages when the annual Veteran Train for Children event takes place.  The Danish North Zealand Veteran Train Association runs the arrangement and has daily responsibility for maintenance of the many trains kept at Graested Station.  Altogether, they manage 30 different vintage trains, transport cars and steam locomotives from the period 1885-1930. These represent items that are a unique part of history and therefore irreplaceable. Security is therefore of utmost concern, and now includes video surveillance.

Milestone Systems and authorized partner SmartGuard have contributed sponsorship of the vintage trains by providing a video surveillance management solution with nine network video cameras to monitor all the activities at Graested Station.

“We are an association run by volunteers, so we are very pleased to get this video surveillance solution from SmartGuard and Milestone Systems. There is a lot of activity at the station year round, but we have unfortunately also experienced some unwanted guests, who have vandalized the vintage trains and our equipment. We hope that the monitoring will reduce this and help the police with evidence materials,” says Michael Randrup, Chairman of North Zealand’s Veteran Train Association.

Besides helping to fight vandalism, the plans are to integrate alarms for fire monitoring with the open platform Milestone video surveillance software.  Earlier, it has been a challenge when steam engines release their clouds of steam and sparks, as it sets off too many false fire alarms. The video software can now be used to verify the alarms so personnel only need to react to those that show fire, which in its worst scenario could cause great destruction of the antique – and irreplaceable – railway equipment.

The video management software is Milestone XProtect™ Essential, connected to and managing both outdoor and indoor network cameras that are equipped with infrared (IR) capabilities for capturing video documentation of incidences at night.  Whenever there might be any unusual behavior at the station, XProtect sends an alert to the station personnel who can access the system remotely and respond as necessary.

“The Milestone solution that we’ve installed secures not only the vintage equipment at Graested Station, but it also helps to ensure that children and adults can continue to enjoy the vintage trains for many years to come, experiencing part of history in action,” says Casper Wilken from SmartGuard, who installed the video surveillance.

This weekend’s event of vintage railway trains takes place both days from noon to 4 p.m. and around 5,000 visitors are expected.
