As the transition from analog video surveillance to IP video continues, the debate rages on as to whether the technical benefits are worth the apparently higher cost. IP video cameras are more expensive than their analog counterparts: They include network interface components, built-in web-servers and higher resolution sensors. But when the total cost of ownership is considered, IP video may well be the more cost effective solution. Total cost of ownership is calculated by the initial equipment purchase, licensing costs, labor, maintenance and upgrades over the expected lifespan of a system.
