Milestone and Sony Professional collaborate

Improving reliability of IP surveillance with an “Edge Recording” solution

Birmingham (IFSEC 2010), May 12 th , 2010:   Today Milestone Systems and Sony Professional announced that the Edge Recording solution becomes available later this year. Sony Professional Solutions Group and Milestone have worked together to determine  the formats and  recording and retrieving protocols, to realize the seamless process between recording IP video that is stored on the camera yet also included afterwards in the XProtect archiving server.

“Milestone and Sony share the same desire to improve the reliability of IP video surveillance through edge recording,” said John Blem, CTO and Co-Founder, Milestone Systems. “Our companies have had intensive engineer-to-engineer collaborative work to develop this solution since a year ago.”

The Edge Recording Solution that Milestone and Sony Professional Solutions Group are developing is a unique solution. An XProtect server can retrieve recorded video and audio with the same codec, image size, FPS and bit rate as live streams of IP video from a camera via RTSP or HTTP. As a result, the Edge Recording solution will expand choices for end-users and installers when designing surveillance systems that require high reliability.

At a Milestone partner event in February there was a demonstration of the ability to take the connector out of a SONY IP camera, put it in front of the camera so you could see it was not connected, put it back in the camera, then go into the Milestone recording software and see the plug being held in front of the camera.  This showed that you can take the network connection away from the camera, yet the software makes sure that the video recorded while the camera was unplugged - recording only at the edge - also gets transported afterwards into the Milestone recording server archive.

USE CASES

Backup and failover
Edge Storage will work as the stand-by storage for a recoding server.  The IP camera can automatically start recording video and audio when the network has disconnected, the application has failed, or the recording server has restarted for maintenance. After the network and system has recovered, the XProtect server can retrieve the missing part of the video and audio files from the IP camera’s storage.

Wireless network environment
In wireless network environments, network connectivity is sometimes unstable and IP cameras can easily lose the network connection to the server so live streaming from the camera is lost. The Edge Recording solution has the ability to record video in the camera storage and the XProtect server can sequentially playback that recorded video upon network recovery.

Recording under low bandwidth environments
Under a low bandwidth network environment, users sometimes find it difficult to have real time streaming with adequate resolution. In such cases, it is more efficient for users to transfer video from camera storage during off-peak hours such as night time, with the exception of video that alerts to important events.

“With an edge recording solution, Milestone and Sony provide the ability to overcome the risk of system failure in IP surveillance. This solution can dramatically reduce loss of video streams or recordings caused by equipment, application or system failure, such as network disconnection. I’m sure this solution will accelerate the migration to IP video even faster,” said Henrik Friborg Jacobsen, Co-Founder & VP Strategic Alliances, Milestone Systems.

“We believe this Edge Recording solution will strengthen the value of Sony IP cameras in the high-end market, especially for such critical security installations as city surveillance, gaming, banking, transportation and utilities, where high reliability is required. Also, this solution will further encourage the adoption of IP surveillance systems to the retail and SMB markets where bandwidth is not always sufficient,” said  Kiyoharu Sassa, Senior Manager, Sony Corporation Professional Solutions Group.

SCHEDULE
The Edge Recording solution will be available with Sony’s generation 5 camera line and Milestone XProtect Corporate, with the official release timing scheduled for the fall of 2010.
