Business Solutions Magazine interviewed Randy Montelius, VP of engineering at CEC, a systems and technology integrator:
Systems integrator CEC has been a long-time physical security provider and has been an advocate of the benefits of IP video for years. One of the biggest challenges the integrator faced in the early days of IP video was with its VMS (video management system) vendor partners at the time. “Many providers offered different platforms for entry, midmarket, and enterprise users,” recalls Randy Montelius, VP of engineering at CEC. “This meant that we had to train employees on multiple VMS platforms, and we had to install a new system when working with an SMB customer whose surveillance needs grew beyond their VMS’s capabilities.”
After conducting extensive research, the integrator partnered with Milestone Systems in 2009, which was among the first vendors to develop a VMS that could serve the needs of customers of any size. “Milestone proved early on that it could also support a much wider array of video cameras than we were used to with other vendors, which also made things simpler,” says Montelius. “They literally supported thousands of camera models, which was another key differentiator.”
Since partnering with Milestone in 2009, CEC has experienced a steady increase in VMS sales. Today, Milestone VMS XProtect sales account for 50 percent of the integrator’s security revenue. “Milestone gives us one simple platform that’s flexible and can grow as our customers’ needs grow,” says Montelius. “If a customer wants to add more cameras or needs more features, it’s as simple as turning on additional licenses within the software. This ease of scalability gives us and our customers peace of mind that the physical security solutions they buy from us today won’t have to be ripped out and replaced as their business needs change in the future.
