viasys Intelligent Video Analytics integrates server or edge based with Milestone IP video platform

Double capacity provides option of both: together in one unified interface
Double capacity addresses the industry’s questions about which approach is best - the answer is having the option of both: together in one unified interface

COPENHAGEN – 29 Sept. 2010. Milestone Systems, the leading global provider of open platform IP video management software, and viasys, winner of the 2010 Frost & Sullivan Best Practice Award, announce integration of the Smart Analytics solution that works both at the server and at the edge. This double capacity addresses the industry’s questions about which approach is best - the answer is having the option of both: together in one unified interface.

Video content analysis (VCA) is an exciting area of innovation in security surveillance and viasys is an advanced player with offerings in next-generation motion detection that handles intruder detection, perimeter protection and alarms. These intelligent capabilities help to reduce false alarms in video surveillance, adding value to security monitoring in more relevant and faster responses to incidences.

“viasys has a strong focus delivering analytics solutions at reasonable prices,” says Jasleen Kaur Rehal, MSP Program Specialist at Milestone Systems. “As a valuable long-term Milestone Solution Partner, this collaboration clearly demonstrates the strengths of the Milestone open platform for allowing value-added functionality and innovations for customers worldwide.”

Multiple source integration gives the best of all worlds

Integration with Milestone XProtect™ VMS allows the viasys analytics meta data to be used in a platform that functions with the advantages of server-based analytics. For example, a viasys analytics red alert box around the intruder (and additional information) can be displayed together with the video stream in the easy-to-manage XProtect Smart Client interface.

The Milestone XProtect Analytics framework also lets operators handle alerts from multiple sources in one unified interface. This means no conflict between the different hosting forms of various analytics: customers may choose server and edge analytics according to different needs – even combine affordable edge analytics for intrusion detection on the majority of cameras with a server-based behavior recognition solution from another vendor on other cameras. All alert data from the algorithms can be available and configurable under the unified user interface of the Milestone video management open platform.

Analytics at the server vs. analytics at the edge

Hosting video content analysis in a centralized way on a dedicated server traditionally has been necessary because most of the analytics algorithms used consumed huge amounts of resources. Although this method provides capabilities for forensic post-analysis and multiple device input with flexible camera choices, it does so with heavy memory resources and extensive network bandwidth consumption.

When analytics run at the edge - on cameras or video encoders – the network traffic is zero as long as no analytics alert happens. Not until an alarm is triggered is there any need to send these IP signals with data to the video management system (VMS). This will then – in any desired frame rate and resolution as set up in the VMS – monitor the event and archive it. The viasys solution is also able to send in ‘push mode’ a complete alarm sequence, including pre- and post-alarm images, via network to any receiver. Here, the bandwidth consumption is so low that even ISDN or UMTS connections are sufficient.

“The core competence from viasys is providing the smallest and fastest field-proven Intelligent Video algorithms. We are focused on alarming – mostly with direct connection to central monitoring stations, which comprise 70% of the security market. Comparable solutions in this segment require 5-20 times more memory capacity and CPU power,” states Dirk Owerfeldt, VP Business Development of viasys.

Even if customers prefer server based analytics, the small and smart design of viasys analytics still excels: Dozens of analytical channels can run on the same server(s) where Milestone is already running. On a dedicated server, hundreds of cameras can be upgraded with intelligent video analytics. No matter where viasys is installed, it is a simple, reliable and affordable solution.

The viasys Smart Analytics solution integrated with the Milestone XProtect Analytics framework for IP video management will be demonstrated at the Milestone booth Hall 2 Booth 330 at Security Essen Germany, 5-8 October 2010.
