Copenhagen Police Choose AC Sikring and Milestone

The busy Stroget downtown area gets IP video protection.
DECEMBER 2008 – Since the beginning of 2008, the Copenhagen Police have worked with the local political authorities to investigate the possibilities for surveillance of the STROGET - a busy downtown walking, shopping and entertainment district. On the basis of the project proposals, the technical solution and the price, the final choice went to Milestone Certified Partner AC Sikring.

The Stroget is one of Copenhagen’s top 10 sightseeing spots with many cafes, restaurants and boutiques of both Danish and international fame. During the day the Stroget is packed with people and street artists.  The atmosphere is full of both culture and Danish history in the local architecture.

However, as in many other European metropolitan areas, the Stroget in recent years has unfortunately experienced an increase in criminality in its nightlife.  Experience from such places as London has shown that video surveillance has a positive influence on this.  The Copenhagen Police are now going to go the same route.  After tough competition between the bidding companies, they have chosen to collaborate with AC Sikring to establish video monitoring on the Stroget.

The goal of the surveillance is to reduce criminality by making it easier to identify perpetrators and achieve better documentation and evidence for investigations, when incidents happen.  Experience has also shown that video surveillance can have a preventive effect – something that AC Sikring has witnessed with many of their other customer installations, where crime has dropped – in some cases more than 60%.

The requirements for the project were defined by the Copenhagen Police together with consultants from DBI.  AC Sikring chose a solution with a future-proof network platform based on products with the leading technology in surveillance. The core of AC Sikring’s implementation is built on software from the Danish company Milestone Systems – IP video management software that is designed as an open platform for the greatest flexibility and scalability.  For the hardware components in the system, AC Sikring chose a best-of-breed mix of network cameras from AXIS, Sony and Arecont.
