For more than 20 years, Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay (BROU) has relied on Milestone Systems' open platform, data-driven video management software to protect assets, detect fraud, and provide evidence for criminal investigations. The centralized XProtect® Corporate VMS manages more than 1,500 cameras across 10 central buildings in Montevideo and more than 120 ATMs nationwide.
Used intensively across multiple departments, the system supports evidence collection, incident review, and asset protection with robust failover architecture and controlled access for authorized users—making it a critical security platform for Uruguay's largest state-owned financial institution.
As one of Uruguay's largest financial institutions, serving customers across 124 branches nationwide and two international locations, BROU needed a video security system capable of protecting diverse assets. The bank required a solution to monitor central office buildings housing approximately 3,000 employees, customer-facing branches handling cash transactions, and a nationwide network of ATMs. Bank officials needed a platform that could scale with institutional growth while maintaining the reliability and robustness essential for a 24/7 financial operation— where system downtime or data gaps could have regulatory, financial, and reputational consequences.
BROU further deployed XProtect Corporate software from Milestone Systems to centralize video security management across its growing infrastructure. The VMS manages more than 1,500 cameras from multiple manufacturers, handling video streams from 10 buildings in Montevideo and ATMs distributed throughout Uruguay. The system operates on 1,000 Milestone licenses and includes DVR integration at ATM locations, where a single license supports multiple cameras per machine. The bank maintains two data centers with failover capability to ensure continuous operation.
The Milestone platform has become an essential tool for fraud detection and criminal investigations at BROU. Different departments across the bank use the system intensively to detect infractions, generate evidence requested by law enforcement, and protect institutional assets. The centralized VMS enables more than 50 authorized users to access video data as needed, while IT administrators maintain complete control over the platform. System updates occur through the Care Plus service agreement, ensuring the bank operates on current technology.
