XProtect client comparison: Smart Client, Web Client & Mobile

8月 14, 2026

XProtect gives users three different ways to access and work with their video management system depending on where they are and what they need to do. XProtect Smart Client provides the most complete desktop experience for daily security operations and investigations. XProtect Web Client brings many core monitoring and investigation workflows to a web browser, while XProtect Mobile gives users access from smartphones and tablets when they’re away from a workstation. In this article, we’ll compare the three clients and explain when each one makes the most sense.

XProtect Smart Client: The full operational workspace

XProtect Smart Client is the desktop application designed for users who spend significant time monitoring, investigating and responding to security events. It provides the broadest set of operational tools in XProtect, making it well suited for control rooms with security operators and investigators working across multiple cameras and incidents throughout the day.

For monitoring, operators can view live video and audio, control cameras and use alarms and Smart Maps to understand what is happening across a site. The workspace can also be tailored to different roles and tasks, with customizable views and support for multiple tabs, windows and displays.

When an incident needs further investigation, Smart Client provides advanced tools for finding and reviewing recorded video. Users can search video and supported metadata, move through footage using the timeline and preserve important moments with bookmarks or evidence locks. Relevant video, audio and still images can then be exported when they need to be shared or retained.

Smart Client can also bring additional XProtect capabilities and integrated solutions into the same operator workspace, including XProtect Access, XProtect Smart Wall and other extensions. This makes it the best fit for users who need a comprehensive environment for ongoing security operations rather than quick or occasional access to the system.

Extend your access beyond the workstation

XProtect Smart Client provides the main operational workspace for many security teams, but access to XProtect doesn’t have to stop when users leave their workstation or control room. XProtect Web Client and XProtect Mobile extend many core monitoring, investigation and response workflows to browsers, smartphones and tablets.

Watch the video below for a quick overview of Web Client and Mobile, then keep reading to explore each client in more detail.

XProtect Web Client: Browser-based access to XProtect

XProtect Web Client gives users access to many core XProtect workflows through a web browser. It’s a good fit for users who need to monitor or investigate activity remotely, from different locations or from different computers, without working from the full Smart Client desktop environment.

From the browser, users can view live and recorded video from one or multiple cameras, control PTZ cameras and use incoming audio or push-to-talk with cameras equipped for audio. They can also view and acknowledge alarms or take actions such as opening a door or turning on a light, depending on how the system is configured.

Beyond monitoring live and recorded video, Web Client also supports investigation workflows directly in the browser. Users can review recordings across multiple cameras, create investigations, add bookmarks and prepare video exports for download. That makes it possible to move from seeing an event to reviewing and preserving the relevant video without switching to Smart Client for every task.

Because it is browser-based, Web Client is especially useful when users need access to XProtect outside their usual workstation. While it does not offer the same depth of workspace customization, advanced search or integrated operational tools as Smart Client, it does provide a strong middle ground between the full desktop experience and mobile access.

XProtect Mobile: Security operations in the field

XProtect Mobile gives users access to XProtect from a smartphone or tablet, making it well suited for security personnel who need to stay connected while moving through a site, responding in the field or working away from a computer. Users can view live and recorded video and review alarms directly from their mobile device.

When an event requires attention, users can move from live video into playback, control PTZ cameras and use incoming audio or push-to-talk with cameras equipped for audio. Push notifications can also alert users to configured alarms and events even when the XProtect Mobile app is not open, helping mobile teams know when something needs their attention.

Smart Map adds another useful layer for users working in the field. It can show cameras and other devices across different locations alongside the user’s current location. Users can then open live video from cameras in the area directly from the map, helping connect their physical location with what the surveillance system is seeing.

One of Mobile’s most distinctive capabilities is Video Push, which lets a user stream video and audio from the camera on their smartphone or tablet directly into XProtect. Location data can also be included with the stream when configured, giving teams a way to bring live video from the scene into the VMS even when there is no fixed camera covering the area.

For detailed guidance on using XProtect from a smartphone or tablet, explore the XProtect Mobile documentation for both administrators and operators.

Which XProtect client should you use?

Choosing the right XProtect client depends on where users are working and what they need to do. Organizations can use Smart Client, Web Client and XProtect Mobile with the same XProtect system, choosing the interface that best fits each user or situation.

That flexibility means access to XProtect does not have to stop when someone leaves a dedicated security workstation. An operator may spend most of the day working in Smart Client, access the system through Web Client from another computer and use XProtect Mobile when responding away from a desk.

The clients can also support different users as part of the same security workflow. For example, a control room operator could investigate an event in Smart Client while another team member reviews relevant video through Web Client from a different location. A responder in the field could receive an alert in XProtect Mobile, use Smart Map to locate nearby cameras or use Video Push to send video from the scene back into XProtect.

Organizations can also give different teams the type of access that makes sense for how they work. Users who need a comprehensive operational workspace can rely on Smart Client, while others may primarily need browser or mobile access to stay informed and respond when necessary.

The result is one XProtect environment that can support different roles, locations and ways of working without requiring every user to interact with the system in the same way.

Wait, but what about XProtect Management Client?

If you’re familiar with XProtect, you may be wondering why we’ve focused on three clients when there is also an XProtect Management Client. The difference is what the interface is designed to do.

While Smart Client, Web Client and XProtect Mobile are used to monitor, investigate and respond to activity, Management Client is an administrative tool. It is where system administrators configure the XProtect environment, including adding cameras and other hardware, managing users and permissions and setting up rules and alarms.

In other words, the three clients covered above give users different ways to work within the security system, while Management Client is used to configure and manage how that system works. That’s why we treat it separately rather than as a fourth equivalent option for accessing video and handling day-to-day security operations.
