Q&A

How should companies of different sizes or maturity levels apply the findings from this study?

The composite organization in the study represents the customers interviewed, but the methodology itself is designed to be broadly applicable. While no two organizations are identical, the study clearly documents all assumptions and variables used.

Companies can adjust key parameters—such as organization size, maturity, or risk appetite—within the model to reflect their own environment. This allows them to use the same ROI framework while generating results that are more closely aligned with their specific situation, regardless of size or industry.

Can customers use the numbers and ROI estimator themselves? 

Yes. All calculations and assumptions are fully documented and transparent in the case study, in line with Forrester’s standard methodology. There are no hidden calculations.

Customers are encouraged to replace the example values with their own data. Using the same model, they can generate results that reflect their specific circumstances. The model also includes a risk adjustment factor to account for variations in operational characteristics, making the results both realistic and market-grounded.

It’s important to note that the ROI results are estimates, but they are based on extensive customer research and market validation.

How did scalability influence customers’ decision to choose XProtect?

From Forrester’s perspective, scalability refers to how well a solution adapts as demand increases or decreases over time—not just whether it meets current needs, but whether it remains viable in the future.

Customers highlighted that XProtect’s architecture made it easy to scale up by adding cameras, devices, and peripherals, all managed through the same centralized interface. This flexibility allowed them to expand without operational complexity.

Additionally, platform decisions are inherently long-term investments. Customers valued XProtect as a scalable platform that allows them to grow without being locked into systems that require significant reinvestment as requirements evolve.

Do users need to register on the Milestone website to access the ROI calculator?

How many end-user companies were interviewed for this study? 

Forrester interviewed four global customers across different regions and industries, including retail, logistics, and education. The solution is industry-agnostic, so a diverse customer base was intentionally selected.

A key criterion was that each customer had used the solution for at least six months, ensuring they could realistically assess and quantify the benefits they experienced.  

Were any manufacturing customers included? 

Manufacturing customers were not interviewed directly for this study. However, the same benefits apply to manufacturing environments, particularly given the inherent complexity of modern manufacturing operations involving IoT and OT devices, sensors, and supply-chain monitoring.

XProtect’s open platform and scalability make it well suited for manufacturing use cases, and it is an industry where Milestone has many active customers globally.

Were any benefits excluded from the study?

The study was conducted from a holistic perspective, covering quantified benefits such as cost savings, flexibility, scalability, and operational efficiency. All benefits discussed with customers were included either as quantified or non-quantifiable benefits where precise measurement was not possible.

Some industry-specific benefits were intentionally excluded from the ROI estimator to ensure the model remains broadly applicable. Operational efficiency, however, consistently emerged as the largest and most persistent value driver across industries.
