Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM) carries around three million passengers every day across seven modes of transportation. In Milan, where ATM operates the city's metro, bus, tram and trolleybus services, Milestone video technology helps protect passengers, employees and infrastructure while supporting daily operations. With more than 10,000 cameras and a 24/7 Security Operations Center, ATM uses Milestone Smart Client to maintain visibility across its transportation network and respond quickly when issues arise.

ATM operates a complex public transportation network across Milan, including metro, tram, trolleybus and bus services. During peak hours, approximately 1,300 surface vehicles are in operation across a busy urban environment where countless variables can affect service.
At the same time, ATM must safeguard passengers, employees and infrastructure across vehicles, stations and facilities throughout the city. Maintaining visibility across this extensive network and understanding what is happening in real time are essential to both security and day-to-day operations.
Milestone provides ATM's security and operations teams with a unified way to monitor activity across the transportation network. Through Milestone Smart Client, operators can access video from more than 10,000 cameras installed across vehicles, stations and facilities.
The platform allows ATM to use cameras regardless of brand or model and integrate them into supervisory systems without additional development. This flexibility also enables ATM to incorporate other technologies, including radar video streams at operational sites and thermal cameras for managing tunnel intrusion events.
Milestone gives ATM's security and operations teams real-time visibility across the network, helping them manage events, support decision-making and respond quickly when issues arise.
By integrating different cameras, systems and technologies into its video infrastructure, ATM has established a flexible foundation that can evolve alongside its operational requirements. The platform supports the company's current security and monitoring needs while providing the scalability to accommodate future technologies and network developments.
ATM's security division includes 150 specially trained officers, all ATM employees, dedicated to protecting company assets and safeguarding the transportation network. Their work is coordinated through a Security Operations Center staffed around the clock.
Using Milestone Smart Client, operators can view video from more than 10,000 cameras across ATM's vehicles, stations and facilities. The ability to incorporate cameras from different manufacturers and integrate video into supervisory systems without additional development gives ATM flexibility in managing its security infrastructure.
ATM has also incorporated radar video streams from operational sites and deployed thermal cameras to help manage tunnel intrusion events.
ATM's Operations Control function combines a central operations control center with rapid response units of cars and motorcycles that address issues on surface lines. The team monitors tram, trolleybus and bus services across a network with approximately 1,300 vehicles operating during peak hours.
Georeferencing technology provides real-time vehicle locations, while video gives operators a direct view of conditions across the network. In addition to cameras installed on nearly the entire vehicle fleet, ATM has positioned cameras at strategic locations, including tram intersections requiring continuous monitoring.
Cameras also monitor electric bus opportunity-charging infrastructure, helping protect against vandalism and providing real-time visibility into infrastructure performance.
