Villa El Salvador, a rapidly growing district in Lima, Peru, faced increasing security challenges with its outdated video security system. In response, the municipality implemented a cutting-edge, open-platform video management solution from Milestone Systems. The integration of advanced cameras, analytics, and centralized monitoring has significantly improved public safety and operational efficiency.
By leveraging state-of-the-art technology and strategic partnerships, Villa El Salvador has not only enhanced its current security capabilities but also laid the groundwork for future smart city initiatives. This transformation showcases the power of data-driven video technology in reshaping urban security.
Villa El Salvador, a rapidly developing district in Lima, Peru, with over 432,000 residents, faced rising security challenges. The district’s existing video infrastructure consisted of isolated, outdated cameras lacking centralized management, making it difficult for authorities to respond promptly to incidents or gather useful intelligence. The municipality needed a comprehensive, scalable solution to improve public safety and lay the groundwork for future smart city initiatives.
Villa El Salvador implemented the Milestone XProtect Professional Plus video management software (VMS) platform, integrating approximately 400 IP network cameras from Axis Communications. The system also includes 150 IP speakers for public announcements and deterrence, as well as 70 panic buttons from 2N strategically placed throughout the district. The system also incorporates advanced analytics, including Neural Labs solutions for license plate recognition, CyberExtruder for facial recognition, and BriefCam Investigator for forensic analysis. A new monitoring center with 30 workstations was built, supported by 62 miles of fiber optic cabling and Dell servers for on-premises storage and processing.
The new system has significantly improved public safety and municipal operations. Strategically placed cameras with advanced analytics allow authorities to detect and respond to incidents more quickly. The system covers major avenues, intersections, and high-traffic areas, while also helping monitor illegal dumping and coordinating cleaning efforts.
The BriefCam Investigator tool has proven particularly valuable for law enforcement, enabling rapid forensic analysis of video footage through its VIDEO SYNOPSIS technology. This capability allows investigators to simultaneously review objects that appeared at different times within the video, dramatically reducing investigation times.
The new system has significantly improved incident response times and crime prevention capabilities. Centralized system management and advanced analytics have enabled more efficient use of resources. The open platform architecture enabled the integration of various technologies and laid the foundation for future smart city initiatives. Encouraged by the success, Villa El Salvador is planning a second phase to add 500 more cameras, extending coverage to parks and residential areas.
