At the Gala Dinner to end MIPS Americas 2017, Milestone CTO, Bjørn Skou Eilertsen and Mikkel Winther, Group Manager, Product Management, announced the first-ever winner of the Milestone Community Kickstarter Competition 2017.
About the winner
Parking Spotter is an application that helps end-users find the closest available parking spot. It helps parking owners improve operational flows by analyzing video images from cameras installed inside a parking lot and gathering all parking places inside a city or country in a single app. In other words, it’s an excellent example of combining video and other technology to improve people’s lives and create more efficient businesses and operations.
How did we get here?
The Milestone Community Kickstarter program was launched in November 2016. Participants had one month to submit their integration ideas to Milestone. The ideas would then be reviewed and from the submissions, five finalists would compete for the grand prize of USD 10,000 cash, plus over USD 40,000 in marketing and development services and assistance. All five finalists were invited to MIPS, where they could present their ideas and solutions to other Community members, as well as to the Milestone Product Advisory Board, who then made the final selection.
Although there could only be one winner, the exposure the finalists received, and the opportunity to interact with hundreds of influential Community members was a prize in itself. “From the moment we were selected as a finalist, we knew that we would receive a lot of exposure and a lot of feedback from the Milestone Community,” comments Ciurte Ovidiu, Product Owner of Parking Spotter. “During those three days we had the opportunity to discuss and receive feedback from a lot of the industry leaders. This was one of the most important things in my opinion.”
A ready-for-market solution
The jury members were quite impressed with the passion and enthusiasm of the Parking Spotter developers. One member stated, “This is a brilliant way to showcase how a fairly simple integration can prove great value.” Another highlighted the app as a great idea and complemented its effective use of the XProtect software to handle camera integration.
What’s next for the winners?
Now that Parking Spotter has been selected as the winner, they will get development help from Milestone to complete their solution. Once the solution is completed, the next step will be assistance in formulating a messaging platform and a go-to-market strategy for the application. Preliminary work on this phase of the process is already underway, as Parking Spotter representatives had an exclusive one-hour session at MIPS with Milestone Vice President of Marketing, Kirsten Højland. The winners will also get a workshop at the Milestone corporate office, covering everything from pricing and licensing to final development and certification, and enter a mentor program to work with an existing Milestone Solution Partner. In other words, everything a burgeoning company needs to make a solid debut in the market.
When reflecting on the win and the opportunities it presents, Ciurte commented, “Besides a lot of joy, this award also means to us a great responsibility to those who voted for us and have shown their trust in our product. We will definitely go on and make this product a real success.”
The benefits of co-created innovation
At a MIPS that focused on how members of the Milestone Community can work together to innovate collectively, it was fitting to end the event with the announcement of the winner of the inaugural Milestone Community Kickstarter competition. “One of the biggest advantages of the Milestone Community is being able to tap into all of the great innovation that goes on in the Community and to bring that innovation forward so that other Community members can take advantage of it,” commented Mikkel Winther.
“I think Parking Spotter is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when we open up our platform and enable others to innovate using our technology. I can’t wait to see what the team behind Parking Spotter can accomplish and how it will benefit customers and companies alike.”
