XProtect® 2016 features a number of under-the-hood enhancements that significantly improve installation performance. Here we take a look at hardware accelerated decoding, and how this change in the way XProtect handles video decoding results in a more competitive, future-proof VMS solution.
What is hardware accelerated decoding?
Hardware accelerated decoding, or GPU (Graphic Processor Unit) video decoding, uses Intel Quick Sync video to handle video stream decoding, as opposed to handling this in the software. The result is increased video quality when viewing multiple streams, and a significant reduction in the amount of CPU power needed to run the XProtect® Smart Client, XProtect® Smart Wall and the Mobile Server.
What does this mean for your customers?
Hardware accelerated decoding means:
|Customers can use the latest camera technology, including 4K and ultra-high definition cameras.
|A reduction in the overall solution cost. Customers can select and/or use servers and workstations with lower specifications, which can be acquired at a lower cost. This also means that you can create a more competitive solution by selecting less expensive hardware.
|Operators experience improved video rendering performance, making it easier to identify potential security issues.
|Customers get a significantly improved investigation experience, with smoother video playback, especially when playing video backwards during investigations of incidents.
|Operators can render more cameras on the same workstation. Instead of the 10-20 cameras that were possible with CPU-based decoding, operators can now have as many as 50 cameras on the same workstation, an improvement especially relevant for Smart Wall users.|
