This year saw the release of three Milestone Product Updates. Here are the highlights:


2017 R1 – February 15

Unleash the full potential of your servers with hardware accelerated video motion detection (VMD)

What does it mean? In short, it means that users can save money because they can run more cameras on the server while maintaining outstanding quality. When video decoding for video motion detection is moved from the Central Processing Unit (CPU) to the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), it increases the numbers of cameras connected by 50% with same CPU load. 

This means you can use fewer servers per installation or lower spec servers, resulting in a lower total system cost. For existing installations, it also means that the same number of cameras will have a lower CPU load, freeing up resources on the server for other components and processes. 

This technology works with XProtect Expert and Corporate and is ideal for large installations where you want to put your hardware to better use and cut costs. On a practical note, harnessing the power of hardware accelerated VMD requires CPU with support for Intel Quick Sync Video.

 2017 R2 – June 8

Faster writing time to disk. Much faster!

Our second Product Update of the year included several improvements focused on speed and quality:


72% faster writing time to disk

The average GOP (group of pictures) writing time measures how quickly the system responds, from the moment a GOP is captured by the camera(s) until it is fully written to disk. Our tests show how well Milestone utilizes the XProtect system: We have cut the writing time by 72% in 2017.


The highest video quality possible when writing to disk

‘Average medias lost’ measures the number of GOP lost between capturing the video and writing it to disk. Our tests show that XProtect has close to Zero media loss. 


2017 R3 – October 5

Highly responsive Smart Client with shorter login time

By moving the content areas in the Smart Client to WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation), we have enabled a smoother, uninterrupted user experience when switching between views, selecting items, navigating content and resizing windows.

We have also made improvements to shorten login time to the Smart Client: Login time as an administrator (against a large system) has been reduced by 50% through 2017 and login time as a none-administrator (against a large system) has been reduced by 15% through 2017.


The Management Client has improved, too

Login time against a large system has been reduced by 50% through 2017. As for login time against a small system, it has been reduced by 25%.


License improvements

We have reduced the footprint processing on the management server and the SQL database has increased the responsiveness on the license page in the Management Client. This has resulted in a much faster online activation time in the Management Client (in large systems with 10,000 cameras and 500 recording servers).
